World Malaria Day: Sign the petition against counterfeit malaria drugs

April 24, 2013 - 21:43 -- Bart G.J. Knols

As a malaria professional, you are probably aware of the unfolding tragedy with counterfeit drugs. Either completely fake (drugs containing nothing more than chalk, washing powder, or even brake fluid) or substandard (not containing enough active ingredient) or outdated drugs are flooding the African market on an ever-increasing scale.

Experts like Professors Paul Newton and Nick White have been ringing the alarm bells for years, but in spite of their efforts the problem is getting worse by the day. Read 'Phake', the excellent book on the subject by Roger Bate, and you will appreciate how serious the situation has become...

The Launch of the Dutch Malaria Foundation!

On 21 April 2011 we celebrated the official launch of the Dutch Malaria Foundation at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During this event we presented with pride the members of our Committee of Recommendation Prof. Femke Halsema, former Member of Parliament, and Prof. Dr. Robbert Dijkgraaf, President of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences.

The Dutch Malaria Foundation strives for a world without malaria, through an integrated approach that focuses on prevention and the protection of people, as well as on the elimination of the parasite and the malaria mosquito. Our activities are a blend of high- and low risk, short- and long term projects. There is a focus on implementation of control- and elimination projects in malaria-endemic countries, applied research, information, education, and local entrepreneurship. We do not intend to do what other organisations do well; we rather collaborate with national and international partners to jointly increase our impact in the field.

The Dutch malaria Foundation has officially been declared a charitable organisation. MalariaWorld has become an official project of the Dutch Malaria Foundation.

MalariaWorld is a large international network of 6400 malaria professionals in more than 110 countries. In due course we will invite members of MalariaWorld to become engaged in the planning and implementation of the activities of our foundation.
