Not Open Access : Clinical and non-clinical safety of artemisinin derivatives in pregnancy.

August 29, 2016 - 15:15 -- NOT Open Access
Gomes C, Boareto AC, Dalsenter PR
Reprod Toxicol. 2016 Aug 6;65:194-203.

In this review we aimed to assess the results of non-clinical and clinical studies with artemisinin derivatives, their mechanisms of embryotoxicity and discuss the safety of their use during pregnancy.

Declining Efficacy of Artemisinin Combination Therapy Against P. Falciparum Malaria on the Thai–Myanmar Border (2003–2013): The Role of Parasite Genetic Factors

August 26, 2016 - 15:19 -- Open Access
Aung Pyae Phyo, Elizabeth A. Ashley, Francois Nosten, et al.
Clin Infect Dis. (2016) 63 (6): 784-791

Between 2003 and 2013, we studied the efficacy of MAS3 in 1005 patients with uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria in relation to molecular markers of resistance.

Gametocyte carriage in uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria following treatment with artemisinin combination therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis of individual patient data

June 8, 2016 - 15:49 -- Open Access
WWARN Gametocyte Study Group
BMC Medicine 2016, 14:79 (24 May 2016)

All relevant studies were identified through a systematic review of PubMed. Risk of bias was evaluated based on study design, methodology, and missing data.

Degradation of Artemisinin-Based Combination Therapies Under Tropical Conditions

May 17, 2016 - 15:47 -- Open Access
Zoe Hall, Elizabeth Louise Allan, Donelly Andrew van Schalkwyk, Albert van Wyk, and Harparkash Kaur
Am J Trop Med Hyg 2016 94:993-1001

Using this developed methodology, it was found that a quarter of ACTs purchased in Enugu, Nigeria (concurrent study), that would have been classified as substandard, were in fact degraded. Presence of degradation products together with evidence of insufficient APIs can be used to classify drugs as degraded.

Cellular engineering of Artemisia annua and Artemisia dubia with the rol ABC genes for enhanced production of potent anti-malarial drug artemisinin

May 6, 2016 - 17:55 -- Open Access
Bushra Hafeez Kiani, John Suberu and Bushra Mirza
Malaria Journal 2016 15:252, 4 May 2016

Transformation of Artemisia sp. with rol ABC genes can lead to the increased production of artemisinin, which will help to meet the increasing demand of artemisinin because of its diverse pharmacological and anti-malarial importance.

NOT Open Access | A Click Chemistry-Based Proteomic Approach Reveals that 1,2,4-Trioxolane and Artemisinin Antimalarials Share a Common Protein Alkylation Profile

April 21, 2016 - 16:33 -- NOT Open Access
Hanafy M. Ismail, Victoria E. Barton, Matthew Panchana, Sitthivut Charoensutthivarakul, Giancarlo A. Biagini, Stephen A. Ward, Paul M. O'Neill
Angewandte Chemie

Here we investigate this proposition using novel clickable 1,2,4-trioxolane activity based protein-profiling probes (ABPPs). ABPPs with potent antimalarial activity were able to alkylate protein target(s) within the asexual erythrocytic stage of Plasmodium falciparum (3D7).

Polymorphisms of the artemisinin resistant marker (K13) in Plasmodium falciparum parasite populations of Grande Comore Island 10 years after artemisinin combination therapy

December 19, 2015 - 09:22 -- Open Access
Huang B, Deng C, Yang T, Xue L, Wang Q, Huang S, Su X, Liu Y, Zheng S, Guan Y, Xu Q, Zhou J, Yuan J, Bacar A, Abdallah K, Attoumane R, Mliva A, Zhong Y, Lu F, Song J
Parasites & Vectors 2015, 8 :634 (15 December 2015)

This study showed increased K13-propeller gene diversity among P. falciparum populations on the Island over the course of 8 years (2006–2014). Nevertheless, none of the polymorphisms known to be associated with artemisinin resistance in Asia was detected in the parasite populations examined.

Not Open Access | Artemisinin nanoformulation suitable for intravenous injection: Preparation, characterization and antimalarial activities

November 25, 2015 - 08:36 -- NOT Open Access
Nehal Ibrahim, Hany Ibrahim, Alicia Moreno Sabater, Dominique Mazier, Alexis Valentin, Françoise Nepveu
International Journal of Pharmaceutics, Volume 495, Issue 2, 30 November 2015, Pages 671-679

Here, we report the preparation, characterization, and in vitro and in vivo biological evaluation of biodegradable albumin-bound artemisinin nanoparticles.

Enhanced artemisinin yield by expression of rol genes in Artemisia annua

November 4, 2015 - 11:59 -- Open Access
Erum Dilshad, Rosa Cusido, Javier Palazon, Karla Estrada, Mercedes Bonfill, Bushra Mirza
Malaria Journal 2015, 14:424 (29 October 2015)

Thus it was proved that rol B and rol C genes are effective in the enhancement of artemisinin content of A. annua, rol B gene being more active to play part in this enhancement than rol C gene.
