The Armed Forces Pest Management Board (AFPMB) of the United States Department of Defense, in collaboration with MESA, has included its research portfolio on the MESA Track database. Click here to access the AFPMB portfolio.
Funding from the AFPMB is through the Research Program for Deployed Warfighter Protection (DWFP). This is an initiative to develop and validate novel methods to protect deployed military personnel from threats posed by disease-carrying insects.
The DWFP portfolio comprises three areas of research: novel insecticide chemistries/formulations, application technology, and personal protective systems. Program consists of a noncompetitive funding process for USDA ARS-based research, and a competitive grants process open to non-USDA scientists (from academia, industry, and military entomologists). The ultimate objective is to find industry partners and get useful products into the market. Ongoing AFPMB projects include:
- New chemicals for arthropod vector control
- Evaluation of insecticide and repellent chemicals and formulations
- Clothing treatments for bite protection
- Optimization of pesticide application equipment and treatments
- Smartphone apps to assist in pesticide application
