Job summary

We are seeking a Communications Manager for the Target Malaria project.

The communications manager plays a critical role in building the profile and voice of Target Malaria through the development of communications and media strategies as well as their implementation. The role will require the individual to interact with a range of skill sets and backgrounds that make up the Target Malaria team to ensure communications on the project is coordinated, compelling, coherent and current. The communications manager will lead the development of communications materials for a wide range of audiences and stakeholders, as well as development of media strategies, as well as coordinate and support the team in crisis communications management and media relations. The role entails training new project staff on effective communications, as well as building the capacity of project members on communications/media related aspects.

You will report directly to the Stakeholder Engagement Manager, and work closely with the Senior Project Manager, and Professor Austin Burt, Global Principal Investigator for Target Malaria.

A deep commitment to the mission of developing and sharing new, cost-effective and sustainable genetic technologies to modify mosquitoes and reduce malaria transmission is required.

Duties and responsibilities

In this role, you will be responsible for the following key areas:

  1. Development and implementation of Target Malaria’s communications and media strategies
  2. Development and implementation of Target Malaria’s communications tools and channels
  3. Contribute to and support capacity building for the communications officer in our African partner countries and the project team at large for communications

Essential requirements

To be successful in this role you must possess the following:

  • A degree in communications, journalism, or a related field
  • Significant experience in a communications or public relations role in a public or private sector organisation
  • Experience in developing and implementing communications and media strategies across multiple audiences
  • Experience with issues management, messaging and providing advice and support through crisis and leveraging communications to support campaigns
  • Experience with traditional and social media, preparing press releases, statements and handling media requests as well as organizing and delivering media campaigns leveraging social media
  • Experience working in Africa or with African organisations
  • Strong written and oral communications skills, with the ability to produce effective communications for a broad variety of audiences
  • Ability to develop and own effective workplans, taking into consideration links across different teams and aligning plans as needed
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills

Salary: £57,606 - £65,949 per annum
