Organization: The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research
Department: Division of Infection & Immunity
Location: Madang, Papua New Guinea
Application deadline: Monday 4 March 2013
The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research has more than sixty cutting edge research laboratories and comprehensive scientific support services primarily based in Parkville, Melbourne.
An excellent opportunity exists for a Post-doctoral Fellow to apply for a newly created position in the Mueller lab in the Infection & Immunity Division based at the PNG Institute of Medical Research (PNGIMR).
For a new project investigating the molecular epidemiology of malaria transmission, we are looking for an enthusiastic post-doctoral scientist with a solid basis in medical entomology and/or vector biology. The project will use membrane feeding of P. vivax and P. falciparum infected blood samples to colony-reared mosquitoes to determine study the relationships between density and genetic complexity of gametocytes in a blood meal and its infectivity to the mosquito host and identify the frequency of sexual recombination in the mosquito midgut in order to quantify potential genetics bottlenecks in the transmission process. The study will therefore combine experimental vector studies with molecular detection and genotyping of Plasmodium spp. parasites and field-based entomology and epidemiology studies.
In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to lead the small entomology / vector biology team at the PNGIMR and will be given the opportunity to develop their own research projects in collaboration with PNGIMR scientists. The position will also require close collaboration with junior PNG scientists including the mentoring of PhD and MSc students in Papua New Guinea.
Candidates should possess a PhD in medical entomology or vector biology and have a strong interest participating in field-based studies. Prior experience in malaria research and/or familiarity with membrane feed assay and Anopheline mosquito colonies is desirable.
This position is available for 2 years starting in the 1st or 2nd quarter of 2013 and is based at the PNGIMR in Madang, Papua New Guinea
Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. Up to 17% superannuation and attractive salary packaging options are available.
