Malaria is globally one of the major infectious diseases with a huge economic and health impact in particular in tropical zones of developing countries. Availability of vaccines that can reduce the spread of malaria are urgently needed for malaria control and elimination.
The work will focus on identification of novel antigens on gametocyte stages responsible for parasite development in the mosquito vector and subsequent spread of the disease in the population. Identified targets for functional antibodies will form the basis for clinical development of a transmission-blocking vaccine.
Gametocytes develop in the human host according to distinct maturation steps I-V. Specific human antibodies acquired after natural infection can prevent the transmission of malaria from man to mosquito but the repertoire of antigenic targets on gametocytes is poorly known.
This research project will address i) antibody recognition of gametocyte-infected erythrocytes by immunofluorescence assays and FACS; ii) its functional phenotype(s); and iii) the immune signature of such antibody responses by immune-profiling techniques. The work will be carried out as part of the Radboud university medical center malaria vaccine program.
Candidates should be a talented PhD-level researchers with ambition for an academic career. Candidates are expected to possess a strong background in immuno-biology preferably in cellular immunology. First time postdoc candidates are encouraged to apply.
Malaria Research Parasitology is part of the department of Medical Microbiology. Malaria Research Parasitology is specialized in two areas of research: the transmission stages of malaria parasites and the development of malaria parasites in the liver. Activities include basic biological and immunological research on malaria parasites in search of candidate vaccines and translational research in experimental infections and naturally exposed populations. The group is one of the very few centers in the world where experimental human infections are carried out which is a powerful instrument to test vaccine efficacy and study human immunological responses.
